The college of medicine and Health Sciences retained its status as a College when the University changed from the collegiate arrangement to the Faculty structure in compliance with the requirements of the Nigerian Medical Council.
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS INTO VARIOUS UNDERGRADUATE COURSES.
The following are the basic entry requirements to the various courses in the college:
MBBS COURSE
The common mark of admission into the MB, BS program is through a pass in the university matriculation examination (UME). All candidates, no matter their mode of admission are required to have passed G.C.E. O’ level or equivalent with credits in English language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Biology at one and same sitting.
Direct entry candidates are required to (a) obtain good passes at Principal level in the Higher School Certificate or G.C.E Advanced level, or equivalent, in Biology or Zoology, Chemistry and Physics in one sitting or (b) be a university degree holder in a related discipline at 2nd class upper division level or above.
Since 2006, post UME screening has been introduced as a requirement for admission. Admission by transfer from an approved medical school is possible, to qualify for the degree of MBBS of this University, candidates must spend at least two years in the school of medicine, (one of which must be the final year).
The curriculum for the degree of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) shall normally last for six academic years, post “O’ level of G.C.E. (or equivalent), but for students admitted with post ‘A’ Level G.C.E. (or equivalent), the curriculum shall normally last for five years. The following undergraduate courses are available in the College of Medicine, of the Imo State University, Owerri.
a. 5/6 year medical course leading to the degree of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MB, BS).
b. 5/6 year course leading to the degree of Doctor of Optometry (OD).
c. 4/5 year course leading to the degree of Bachelor medical Laboratory Science (BMLS).
d. 4/5 year course leading to the degree of bachelor of nursing Science (BNSc).
