The Department of Accountancy was established in Imo State University in 1992. It runs a four year programme leading to the award of B.Sc degree in Accountancy. The minimum requirement for admission into this department is five credit level passes which must include Mathematics, English and Economics at not more than two sittings. Prospective candidates for admission through UME are required to offer English Language, Mathematics, Economics and any other subject.
The Department has qualified and dedicated lecturers who are doing their best to maintain the high standard of which the department is known. Graduates of the department are gainfully employed in all walks of life and their employers testify to their wonderful performances.
The general philosophy is to develop the mind, impart both theoretical and practical knowledge on the individual student, develop self confidence and help them to be innovative and self reliant in the field of Accounting.
The major objectives of the Bachelor’s Degree programme in Accountancy
are to:
(i) Produce accounting personnel that can contribute to the development and growth of accounting practice.
(ii) Provide basic knowledge and skills needed for the understanding and analysis of problems related to accounting and administration in industrial, commercial, public and other human organization.
(iii) Equip students with knowledge and skills of decision making, designing accounting systems, especially the analytical skills needed for recognizing, defining and solving problems.
(iv) Develop in students’ leadership and interpersonal relations skills in accounting and business.
(v) Provide training aimed at improving and upgrading the existing and potential manpower needed for national development.
The minimum academic requirement is credit passes in five subjects including English Language, Mathematics, and Economics at not more than two sittings at the ordinary level or School Certificate Examination.
a. Applicants should possess five credit passes in the GCE or equivalent at the ordinary level including English Language, Mathematics and Economics.
b. OND in Accountancy/Accounting with at least Upper Credit grade in addition to the five credit passes in (a) above.
c. HND in Accountancy with at least lower credit in addition to five credit passes as above.
Admission is usually through UTME with Candidates having to satisfy both the University minimum and departmental entry requirements. A Five ‘O’ Level credits at not more than two sittings and these must include English Language, Mathematics and Economics plus any other two.
