Introduction

The department of building is housed in the faculty of Environmental Sciences of Imo State University. The Department offers a five-year Bachelor of Science (B.Sc) Degree programme, designed to meet the high level manpower needs of the construction industry which contributes significantly to the gross national product (GDP) of any nation.

Mission and Philosophy

The philosophy underlying the Building Programme in Imo State University is the development and advancement of the science and practice of Building Technology and Building Production Management.

The dynamism in the construction industry demands specialists who have acquired the requisite knowledge and training, in the planning and control of building production processes through the application of modern methods and techniques in building production management to ensure timely completion of building projects within given cost limit and specified quality. Therefore, the Building graduates are trained to devote substantial part of their practice to solving national problems on how to make Nigeria technologically independent and break new grounds in all aspects of Building Technology, Building Materials, Production Management, Construction Processes, Building Surveying and Building Maintenance. The programme also designed to provide educational background in scientific research and outreach opportunities that serve both the needs of students and the construction industry at large.

Aims and Objectives

The aim of the Building programme in Imo State University is to train competent and self-reliant graduates in Building profession. This aim could be achieved through the following objectives:
i) To provide sufficient general knowledge and specified skills/techniques, which will enable the professional builder to manage, coordinate and control the technological, economic, human and material resources involved in building production process and to become building production experts.
ii) To train the building graduate to interact effectively with owners, developers, other allied professionals, manufacturers, and suppliers of building material components and other stakeholders in the construction industry such as artisans and craftmen.
iii) To fully equip the building graduate for public and private sector services, and entrepreneurship. iv) To groom graduates in the techniques and culture of building production, maintenance technology and facility management.

Admission Requirements

UTME:

Admission shall normally be by entrance examination organised by University Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) with minimum entry requirements of credit grade in Mathematics, English Language, Physics, Chemistry and any one from Technical Drawing, Economics, Land Surveying/Further Mathematics, Geography, Building Construction and Fine Art, obtained from the following examinations:
• West African School Certificate (WASC).
• Senior Secondary School Certificate ( SSCE ).
• National Examination Council ( NECO).
• NABTEB or any other certificate recognised by NUC.

Direct Entry:

Students can be admitted by placement from the Pre-degree or Remedial Studies of the University. Holders of OND in Building, Civil Engineering and other appropriate Disciplines with passes at upper credit or HND lower credit, N.C.E. (Tech) Building –credit, would be admitted into the 200 level of the programme, provided he or she required O’level subjects, while HND upper credit may be considered for 300 level provided he or she has the minimum O’level requirement. Transfer cases from other institutions on good grounds could be admitted to appropriate part of the programme provided that any deficiency in their background in made up.
