Introduction

The department offers a five year programme for UTME candidates and a four and three year programmes for direct entry candidates. At the end of the programme, candidates are awarded the Bachelor of Engineering (B.Eng) in Civil Engineering.

Mission

The mission of the department is to produce high quality Civil engineers equipped with adequate skills and knowledge that will enable them contribute their quota in the economic and technological transformation of the Nigerian nation. The department desires to produce civil engineers who possess the capacity to pursue careers in research and academic fields.

Philosophy and Objectives Of The Programme

The B. Eng programme in Civil Engineering is designed to provide a broad based education necessary for careers in private practice, private sector employment, public service and research. The students are fully prepared to have adequate knowledge and field experiences in the different areas of Civil Engineering which include Transportation Engineering, Structural Engineering, and Water Resources and Environmental Engineering. The students are sufficiently equipped for both professional practice and post graduate studies. The entire programme is fortified with courses in Mathematics, Humanities, Social Sciences, Communication Skills etc. The programme is also sandwiched with a six month industrial attachment which enables the student to interact with professionals in the industry and relate their theoretical knowledge to practical work.


Admission Requirements

UTME:

In addition to an acceptable pass in both UTME and Post UTME screening exercise, candidates must have obtained at not more than two sittings, credit level pass in Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSCE) or its equivalent as approved by the Senate of Imo State University in English Language, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and any other science or technical subject.

Direct Entry:

1. Candidates with upper credit level passes in OND or its equivalent qualification in Engineering may be admitted into the 200 level.
2. In exceptional cases, candidates with HND Upper Credit level passes or its equivalent in Engineering may be admitted into the 300 level.
3. Candidates in (1) and (2) above must satisfy the O’level requirements of the respective programmes.
