Introduction
The department of Fine and Applied Arts of Imo State University is one amongst the departments in the Faculty of Environmental Sciences. The department admitted its pioneer students in 1995/96 academic year with initial staff strength of three lecturers from Abia State University, Okigwe.
From 1996/97 and 1997/98 session, the staff strength grew from three to 10 highly experienced and professionally qualified academic staff spread over five areas of specialisation. These are: Ceramics, Painting, Graphics, Sculpture and Textiles.
Fine and Applied Arts in Imo State University sets out to produce graduates that are sufficiently skilled to be self reliant in their chosen areas of specialisation. The graduates produced attain professional competence and are capable of contributing in the development of Imo State in particular and Nigeria in general.
Philosophy
The philosophy of the department of fine and applied arts is to systematically provide opportunities for the art students to acquire and synthesize knowledge, intellectual concepts and artistic skills with keen interest, which in turn will enable them fulfill their potentials in preparation for full participation in society.
Mission
The mission of the department is to provide students who seek professional art careers with quality visual education and good research orientation in and across the fields of fine and applied arts. With this is mind, the art students can make significance economic, social and cultural contributions that can be felt locally, nationally and internationally.
Vision
The department strives to create an environment where Fine and Applied Arts enhances our social, cultural, economic and environmental quality of life.
Objectives
1. The objectives of the programme hinges on producing visual artists who will always have the knack to grasp complex visual problems and create solutions that are innovative in other to meet today’s complex and dynamic evolving global culture.
2. It is geared toward the recognition of the growing relevance and interrelationship of art to science and technology. This critical interrelationship allows visual artists to go beyond conventional boundaries to articulate innovative ways of solving unique challenges.
3. The programme will enable students attain high standards of artistic articulating necessary for the application of professional skills in a broader cultural contest, in pursuance or this goal, the programme, therefore, stresses both practical performance and academic excellence through a sequenced exposure to a wide range of media, materials and techniques explored within their theoretical, historical and cultural contexts.
4. graduates of visual Arts should be made to acquire a broad based interdisciplinary studies especially in allied professions to enable them be more versatile as to be in engage in entrepreneurship.
Admission Requirements
UTME:
The UTME candidates must possess a minimum of 5 at the SSE examination all the GCE O’ Level. The credit passes must include fine Arts, creative Arts or technical drawing, and English language.
Direct Entry:
i. 2 ‘A’ level GCE papers: including Fine and Applied Arts plus 4 ‘O’ level credits including English language.
ii. National Diploma in Art (Higher Credit) or fine and Applied Arts plus at least 4 ‘O’ level credit including English language.
iii. N.C.E (Nigeria Certificate in Education) and fine Arts plus at least four ‘O’ level credits including English language.
iv. Equivalent qualifications may be accepted.
v. A portfolio of previous work done by candidates must be submitted to the Head of Department on enrolment.
