Introduction

Between the food producer and the consumer, a lot of input is required to conserve, preserve, process, transform and detoxify produced food for maximum benefit of the consumer as well as generally give necessary feedback that would enhance improvement in food production. Effective utilization of food resources also requires continuous interaction generated adverse multiplier effect on all facets of society.

Nigeria obviously has enough available land to produce much needed food of study which is based on the application of basic sciences has a vital role to play in harmonizing the abundant resources that will enhance our nutritional status locally and earn the country the much needed foreign exchange to reduce mounting import bill and external debt and services other sectors of the economy.

Philosophy and Objective

The Food Science and Technology Programme at Imo State University aims at adequate training of senior level manpower in food related industries, food research institutions, government, departments and services related to these activities .it also aims at training students who will capable of succefully establishing their own food related enterprises, thereby producing self reliant graduates. The student of food science and technology is exposed to the knowledge of the nature, composition, processing, and quality control, etc designed to equip the learner to grasp food problems in their total condition and to scientifically design a practical solution to them.
Students are exposed to practical work experience in food industries and Food Research institutions as well as the activities of government agencies in the formulation and enforcement of food laws and other related policies.

Admission Requirements

UTME:

For admission through U.T.M.E. for the 5-year B. SC Programme candidates must have passes in five (5)WASCE/GCE/NECO Subjects including Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology or Agriculture sciences, Physics and English Language in not more than two sittings.

Direct Entry:

Candidates must have passes in two or more papers at principal level (Higher School Certificate or relevant papers in GCE Advanced Level) in any two or the following subjects: Biology, Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry. Holders of NCE or ND in agriculture or related disciplines wit not less than merit level may be considered for direct entry into 200 level of the programme, while holders of HND with not less than merit pass may be admitted into 300 level of the programme, provided such candidates have met the minimum UME requirements.
