Introduction

Hospitality and tourism management started in the 1994/1995 session as Hotel Administration with an initial intake of fifteen students. During the 1996/97 session, the sub-discipline of Tourism was introduced and the programme was known as Hotel Administration and Tourism Management. The implication of this re-organisation was that the programme offers a full complement of courses in both Hospitality and Tourism, the Department graduated its first batch of students in the 1997/98 sessions. The postgraduate diploma programme in the discipline was mounted in 1999/2000 session while the Master of Science (M.Sc) degree programme followed I 2001/2002 session. About 500 students are currently enrolled in the programme.

Philosophy

The degree programme in Hospitality and Tourism Management is designed to produce professional management personnel capable of meeting the demands and challenges of the fast growing hospitality and tourism industry.

Objectives

A graduate of Hospitality and Tourism management should be capable of managing hotels and resorts, tourist centres, recreational sports facilities, travel agencies, airlines, transport organizations, restaurants and hostels, entertainment and public relations outfits. He should also be able to offer professional advice and consultancy services in development and management of Hospitality and Tourism Projects.

Admission Requirements

UTME:

UTME candidates must obtain five credit passes in the senior secondary school certificate (SSSC) or the General Certificate of Education (GCE) examinations in not more than two sittings. The subjects passed must include English Language, Mathematics and Economics.

Direct Entry:

Candidates must obtain in addition to the UME requirement, Ordinary National Diploma (OND) or Higher National Diploma (HND) in hospitality and tourism related courses e.g., Hotel and Catering Management, Leisure and recreational management, Institutional management, wild life-park management e.t.c. with at least a lower credit grade.
