Introduction

The department of Language Education offers courses leading to the award of a B.A degree in Education combined in English Language, French Language or Igbo Language. Admission into the Programmes is either by University Matriculation Examination (UTME) or Direct Entry. Candidates with NCE are admitted through Direct Entry do the 3-year or 2- year degree programmes, depending on their entry qualifications.

Mission

Our mission is to develop language teachers with active and creative minds, sense of understanding and compassion for students and the courage to act on their beliefs. We stress the total development of each student cognitively, affectively and psychomotively.

Vision

This department will in a foreseeable future become a national and International Centre of excellence in research and training for the production of English/Igbo/French language educators for both secondary schools and tertiary levels of education.

Admission Requirements

i) English Language

1. For admission into the four year degree programme leading to the award of a B.A (Ed) degree, candidates in Education English should possess at least credit passes in five subjects including: English language, Literature in English and Mathematics and any other two subjects obtained in not more than two sittings of a senior school certificate examinations (SSCE). Also a required/stipulated pass in UTME of the admission year. The most recent of the certificate being considered should not have lasted for more than six years.

2. For admission through direct entry into the Four year degree programme leading to the award of a B.A Ed degree candidates should possess:
a. Three subjects at the principal level of A/L examinations, especially English language, Literature in English and any other arts subject, in addition to the normal five subjects obtained at O/Level as mentioned above.
b. N.C.E with at least passes in English, Literature in English and education theory. There shall be a minimum of six points (6 points) by the point system. Points from education practice do not count. This qualifies the candidates for a four –year degree programme.

3. For admission into the three-year degree programme leading to the award of a B.A (Ed) degree, candidates should possess at least overall merit passes in English Language, literature in English and education theory (at least 9 points shall be earned by candidate). Also, points from education practice do not count.

ii) French Language

1. For admission into the four year degree programme leading to the award of a B.A (Ed) degree, candidates in Education French should possess at least credit passes in five subjects including French, English language and Mathematics and any other two subjects obtained in not more than two sittings of a senior school certificate examinations (SSCE). Also a required/stipulated pass in UTME of the admission year. The most recent of the certificate being considered should not have lasted for more than six years. For admission into the four year degree programme leading to the award of a B.A (Ed) degree, candidates in Education Igbo should possess at least credit passes in five subjects including: Igbo language, English language and Mathematics and any other two subjects obtained in not more than two sittings of a senior school certificate examinations (SSCE). Also a required/stipulated pass in UTME of the admission year.

2. For admission through direct entry into the three year degree programme leading to the award of a B.A (Ed) degree candidates should possess:
