In recognition of the need for specialists to meet the requirement of rapidly changing environments and technologies, the Library and Information Science programme offers integrated basic professional course of studies needed for carriers in all types of libraries, information and documentation centers.
The programme Library and Information is dynamic and multifaceted. It is dedicated to identifying; organizing, disseminating and encouraging the use of records of human culture-past and present-to broadly reflect and actively respond to the needs of the society. This programme recognizes the value of information as vital resources for the development of the individual, groups of persons and nations. It should inculcate in the graduate of the programme, the spirit of problem-solving through information provision in order to meet society’s information needs for a variety of purposes such as education, research, enlightenment and recreation. The programme should develop and train librarians in the mastery and understanding of techniques of establishing and managing libraries and information centers. Graduates of the Department’s BLS programme should be familiarized with the sensitized to the application of theories and concepts that are applicable to libraries. They should have an understanding of how information is accumulated, analyzed and disseminated. They should be able to promote and encourage and utilization for the advancement of knowledge and national development.
Within the context of the mission of the Imo State University and of professional education generally, the Library and Information Science programme has as its goals, education, research and public service to the community at large. It takes into account Nigeria’s national objectives of democracy, egalitarianism, justice, unity, self-reliance, economic dynamism and full opportunities for citizens and hence prepares her products to meaningfully contribute o their realization.
The Library and Information Science course of study is designed to educate librarians to understand and apply the theory and principles underlying service, to be aware of the scope and nature of cultural records and to be capable of exercising professional judgment.
The programme offers students the opportunity to gain the knowledge, skills and motivation necessary to analyze the informational, culture and educational requirements of varied communities; to formulate creative responses to make wise and accountable decisions and to carry out successfully articulated programmes of library service in the field and to lay proper foundations for further studies in Library and Information Science. The student will be guided to recognize the librarian’s roles as active agents in the creation, transmission, preservation and utilization of knowledge.
The programme study leads to the award of the Bachelor of Library and Information Science-BLS.
Five (5) credit passes at WAEC/NECO/SSCE/NECO or equivalent in not more than two sittings. Credit in English Language and Mathematics ND and HND are also accepted for Direct Entry candidates.
Candidates for direct entry admission must possess any of the following qualifications at credit level obtained from any recognized institution of higher learning in Nigeria or overseas:
1. National Diploma (ND) in Library and Information science
2. Diploma in library and Information Science.
3. NCE in Library and Information Science.
