Introduction

The department of Life Science Education offers courses that lead to the award of B Sc. Degree in Education combined with a science subject. Admission into the programme is either by entrance examination UTME & Post UTME or by direct entry (DE). Candidates admitted through UTME do the 4 year degree programmes while those admitted through DE do the 3 year or 2 year programme (as the case may be), depending upon their entry qualifications.

Programmes housed in the Department are B.Sc:

  • i) Education Agricultural Science

  • ii) Education Biology


Philosophy and Objectives

The philosophy of education is necessarily derived from the National policy on Education. The philosophy of Education is in turn based on the following general aspirations of Nigeria as contained in section 1 paragraph 1 of the National Policy on Education:
(a) A free and democratic society;
(b) A just and egalitarian society;
(c) A united, strong and self-reliant nation;
(d) A great and dynamic economy;
(e) A land of bright and full opportunity for all citizens.

The goals of education in turn are derived from these statements. A faculty of education should therefore, be able to enhance the development of the following:
(a) Respect for the work and dignity of the individual;
(b) Faith in man’s ability to make rational decisions;
(c) Moral and spiritual values in inter-personal and human relations;
(d) Respect for the dignity of labour and promotion of the emotional, physical and psychological health of all children;
(e) Shared responsibility for the common good of society;
(f) The inculcation of the right type values and attitudes for the survival of the individual and the Nigerian society;
(g) The inculcation of national consciousness and national unity;
(h) The training of the mind in the understanding of the world around and
(i) The acquisition of appropriate skills, abilities and competencies, both mental and physical as equipment for the individual to live in and contribute to the development of his society.

To make the philosophy functional, the National Policy in sections 5 and 9 provides details of these goals under Higher Education in general and teacher Education in particular. The provisions as contained in section 5 are as follows:
(a) The acquisition , development and inculcation of the proper value-orientation for the survival of the individuals and society;
(b) The development of the intellectual capacities of individuals to understand and appreciate their environment;
(c) The acquisition of both physical and intellectual skills, which will enable individuals to develop into useful members of the community;
(d) The acquisition of an objective in view of the local and external environments.

Admission Requirements

UTME:

1. For admission into the four year degree programmes leading to the award of a B Sc. Degree, candidates in general should possess at least credit (or merit) level passes in five subjects, including English Language, obtained in not more than two sittings of O’ Level examinations (GCE, SSCE or TC II examinations). The most recent of the certificates being considered should not have lasts for more than six years.

Specifically, for admission into Education Biology, the subjects in which credit/merit level passes are obtained should include Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics.

Direct Entry:

2. For admission through Direct Entry into the three year programmes, leading to the award of a B Sc. Degree, candidates should possess:

i. Three papers passed at the principal level of A/L examinations. The papers passed should include the subjects to be combined with education; ACE with at least an overall merit level passes in the various areas including the subject to be combined with education; and

ii. NCE with at least passes in the various areas including the subject to be combined with education (a minimum of 6 points by the point system. However, points from Education practice do not count).

3. In addition to each 2 (I), (ii) above, a candidate for a B Sc. Programme should possess O/L credit/merit level pass in mathematics For admission into the two-year degree programme leading to the award of a B Sc. Degree, candidates should possess at least overall merit level passes in the various areas, including the subject the subject to be combined with education (at least 9 points following the point system)

4. However, points from education practice do not count. Section 2 (i), (ii) and (a) and (b) above apply.
