The department of linguistics and Igbo offer courses leading to the award of the B.A.(HONOURS) degree in linguistics and igbo.Admission by entrance examination(UME) or by direct entry for candidates who posses relevant papers or equivalent year or 2-year programme, depending on the nature of their res7ults in the N.C.E.or A- level examination.
The linguistics and Igbo programme is founded on the philosophy of the Imo State University, which aims at a broad liberal and sound education for the development of the “total person”. Accordingly, the objectives of the programme are as follows:
LINGUISTICS:
I. To furnish students with sound knowledge of the various principles in the current theories and practice of linguistics.
II. To prepare them to be able to apply the required knowledge and skills to language problems for the advancement of their society.
III. To equip them for further studies in the discipline and for relevant careers.
IGBO
I. To expose students to the various aspects of the Igbo including the following:
(a). Igbo as a people with culture-area and history
(b). Igbo as a language
(c). Igbo as a literature and art
Learners would thus acquire greater competence in their appreciation of the values inherent in the above and related areas.
II. To train students in the practical application of their knowledge to human development.
III. To equip them for further studies in the discipline and relevant careers.
Candidates must obtain 5 credit including English Language and Igbo Language at WASC/SSCE/GCE/NECO or O-LEVELS.
(i) A-Level passes in two subjects including Igbo
(ii) NCE or ND in Igbo combination with at least merit level.
(c) Apart from their A-level, N.C.E. or ND certificates, Direct Entry candidates must have obtained credits in English and Igbo languages at WASC/SSCE/GCE/NECO or O-LEVELS.
