The Department of mechanical engineering offers a five year (B.Eng) Mechanical engineering programme for UTME (Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination) candidates and a four year (B.Eng) Mechanical Engineering Programme for direct entry candidates.
Mechanical engineering is a science as well as an art of formulation, design, development, manufacturing and control of raw material into useful mechanical work. The mechanical engineering programme is aimed therefore at producing highly skilled manpower, well versed in practical applications of engineering science to the solution of problems regarding the manufacture and operation of industrial machines, processes and power production.
To this end the programme seals to inculcate in the students both in-depth theoretical knowledge and specialized practical skills to enable such graduates co-ordinate and control the technological, economic, human and material resources involved in the mechanical industry.
In keeping with the afore-mentioned philosophy, graduates of the programme are expected among other things to be employers of labour, managers of men and job creators rather than job seekers, able to design, construct, install, operate and maintain mechanical engineering system in their respective areas of specialization.
The academic programme, therefore, is structured not only to offer challenges but to encourage the development of originality in the student and to bring forth the ingenuity in him. To end the programme is designed to prepare students for professional positions in three main areas of specialization.
Candidates are admitted into the 5 year bachelor of engineering degree (B.Eng) programme of the department through any of the following:
1. Unified tertiary matriculation examinations
2. Direct entry
3. Inter university transfer
