Philosophy of the programme
The philosophy of the Nursing programme of Imo State University is derived from the philosophy of the University as well as from the philosophy of Nursing Profession in general which have their focal point on the wellbeing of human persons. It takes into cognizance the general aims and philosophy of education. Nursing profession is based on the philosophy that the essential purpose of Nursing is to achieve better health for the individual and the community.
Nursing is the protection, promotion, and optimization of health and abilities, prevention of illness and injury, alleviation of suffering through the diagnosis and treatment of human response, and advocacy in the care of individuals, families, communities, and populations (ANA, 2004). Nurses, often in collaboration with other health care professionals, promote the optimal health care and comfort in individuals and groups through the systematic application of knowledge from nursing and related disciplines.
The department believes that man as a biopsycho-social and spiritual being is the focus of all nursing activities. Man is an integral part of the family, the community and the society. It is useful to conceptualize the individual and the environment as open systems which engaged in continuous dynamic interaction in which each is susceptible to change by each other. The human environment is therefore a major factor in man’s health status. Health exists in a continuum ranging from wellness to illness/death and the position of man on the continuum at any given time is a function of adaptation to both internal and external stressors. Nursing is a helping relationship in which the Nursing process is a major tool for Nursing care. The ultimate aim of nursing education is the advancement of health, well-being and general welfare of the population through advanced knowledge and skills.
Our Mission
The department graduates polyvalent nurses imbued with essential moral, humanitarian and ethical principles required to meet the health needs of individuals, families and communities entrusted in their care. In general, the mission of the department is to prepare students to apply knowledge, abilities and values in promoting health, wholeness, and human potential in a complex, dynamic and innovative practice environment.
Specifically, the programme is designed to:
Expose the students to various disciplines and clinical settings.
Orient students with realities of disease patterns and peculiarities among various age groups, genders and communities.
Provide the nurse with a basic diagnostic skills required in the identification and solution of the clients/community health problems.
Equip the students with the knowledge and skills to be able to plan, organize and evaluate appropriate health programmes. (promotive, preventive, creative and rehabilitative) in collaboration with other members of the health team in order to reduce mortality.
Develop in the students, the spirits of team work in promoting health in all population groups in Nigeria and outside the country.
Vision
The department aspires to be at the forefront in the areas of professionalism, quality, innovation, and leadership. We envision a strong dedication to promoting health and caring service by providing our patients with exceptional nursing care in an environment that empowers, educates, and nurtures patients and guides them and their families through the health care system.
Aims and Objectives of the programme
The B.N.Sc programme has the following aims:
1. To produce professional Nurses, Midwives and Community Health Nurse Practitioners capable of assuming professional responsibility in any healthcare setting.
2. To develop through quality continued education, competent nurse practitioner to meet the diverse and rapidly changing health needs of the people of Imo State and Nigeria at large.
3. To advance public welfare through the preparation of competent polyvalent nurse practitioners who will provide safe, acceptable, effective and high quality health services to individuals, families and communities.
4. To increase the research awareness among nurses and provide a focus for the development and maintenance of high professional standards in nursing. The scientific knowledge generated by the research process will be integrated into the learning content of the programme and also be utilized in practice.
5. To uphold the academic standards stipulated by Imo State University.
Admission Requirements
UTME:
Candidates must have an appropriate pass in UTME examination of the Joint Admission Matriculation Board (JAMB). In addition the candidate must hold WASC/SSCE/ GCE/NECO or its equivalent with at least credit in 5 subjects (at not more than two sittings) including English language, Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics.
Direct Entry:
a. Candidate with Registered Nurse certificate must have five credits at ordinary level which must include English, Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology, and Physics at credit level at not more than two sittings,
b. Candidates with GCE Advanced level certificate must also have appropriate pass in the screening test of the university.
c. Degree holders in science disciplines with not less than 2nd Class Honours may be admitted through direct entry.
Direct Entry students will be placed at 200 level of study. The non-nursing qualified direct entry students will be expected to sit for at least 2 professional examinations like UTME candidates. Already trained nurses can sit for the professional examination not already possessed.
