Philosophy, Major Aims and Objectives of the Department

The philosophy and mission of the discipline of political Science is to produce graduates with critical minds, requisite skills and abilities to comprehend, analyze, predict and influence the factors that shape and mould the government and the management of public sector organizations in an ever changing socio-political environment in a globalizing world.

The Objectives of a Degree Programme in Political Science

The objectives of a degree in Political Science are:
1. To provide training in political science and its application to the development of political institutions of the state
ii. To stimulate the students intellectually through the programme, in such a way that they appreciate social challenges as concrete issues and as facts that exist;
iii. To provide a solid foundation of knowledge about the workings of the government and public sector institutions and develop the skills for the practical application of such knowledge;
iv. To develop in students, such skills and competency that would allow them to be self reliant and entrepreneurial;
v. To provide the students with necessary skills for studying and analyzing organizations and society;
vi. To provide the students with the solid base from which they can proceed to higher studies in any branch of political science.

Admission Into The Political Science Programme

In general, admission into the department is through the Universities Matriculation Examination (UME) organized by the Joint Admissions and Matriculations Board (JAMB).

Entry Requirements

(a) Age Limit

Candidates seeking for admission into the department must not be less than sixteen (16) years old in the year of admission.

(b) Academic Qualifications

Candidates seeking for admission into the programme must possess at least five ordinary level credit passes in the relevant subjects including English Language and Mathematics at not more than two sittings, through any one or a combination of the following: WASCE, GCE, NECO or their equivalents as recognized by Imo State University, Owerri. In addition, one of the five ordinary level credit passes must be Government or History. Candidates for Direct Entry should see JAMB Brochure or the Imo State University Academic Regulations.

Requirements for Bachelor Degree in Political Science

To obtain a B.Sc. degree in Political Science, a student must:
a). Complete an approved programme of study consisting of a total course load of not less than 70 courses.
b). Pass all the foundation courses prescribed for the Department. A grade of not less than an ā€œEā€ must be achieved in each of these foundation courses.
c). Achieve an overall grade point average (GPA) of not below 2.00 in the courses.
d). Satisfy all financial obligations to the University, as well as other requirements relating to attendance and character as may be prescribed by Senate; and
e). Be formally recommended by the Faculty Board for the award of a degree.
f). To remain in a degree programme, a student must have obtained a cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of not less than 1.75 at the end of the first year of study and not less than 2.00 in subsequent years. It is not permissible as earlier mentioned, to remain in the programme for more than six years.
