Introduction

The Quantity Surveying Department offers a five-year (B.Sc) Quantity Surveying programme for UTME candidates and two-four year B.Sc programmes for direct entry candidates.

The construction industry effect economic processes which are capable of releasing significant and positive macro-economic activities, generates appreciable goods and services which penetrates and nourish the roots of most basic human needs culminating to the boost of the economy.

Quantity Surveying is a techno-managerial professional course which enables students to acquire knowledge of scientific, technological, law and social science subjects.

These intellectual empowerment underpinned with subsequent industrial/practical experiences enable the eventual professional to be a major stakeholder in the construction industry in particular and other sectors of the economy.

Philosophy

As a philosophy, the Department of Quantity Surveying, Imo State University, Owerri seeks to produce graduates who are intellectually empowered theoretically and practically in the collection, analyses, interpretation and application of cost related data towards total procurement economy and timely delivery of all projects in the construction industry in particular and other sectors of the economy.

Aims

The aim of the Quantity Surveying programme of the Imo State University is to produce graduates who are empowered with sufficient intellectual capacities for eventual planning, controlling and management of total costs in the construction and other associated industries.

Objectives

The graduates of Quantity surveying programme are expected to possess adequate competence in the following areas:
(a) Feasibility studies and reports on capital projects.
(b) Construction Cost modeling and Economics;
(c) Tender and contract Documentation;
(d) Construction Project Management; and above all, being registerable with the Nigerian Institute of Quantity Surveyors (NIOS), the Quantity Surveyors Registration Board of Nigeria (QSRBN) and similar Institutions the world-over.

Admission Requirements

UTME:

Candidates who are found to be successful in the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) and subsequently screened by Imo State University are usually admitted into five year duration of the programme.
In addition, the candidates would have obtained a minimum of five (5) credits in the SSCE/GCE/NECO O’Level at not more than two sittings in the following subjects: Mathematics, Physics, English Language and any other two (2) subjects from Fine Art, Technical Drawing, Additional Mathematics, Economics, Geography, Biology and Chemistry.

Direct Entry:

(i) Holders of National Diploma (ND), with at least Credit level in Building Technology, Civil Engineering, Architecture and Quantity Surveying may be admitted into the 200 level provided such candidates fulfill the UME admission requirement above.
(ii) Holders of HND in Quantity Surveying or Building Technology, with minimum of lower credit may be admitted into 300 level provided such candidate fulfill the UME requirements.
(iii) Holders of HND in Quantity Surveying or Building Technology and had passed the test of Professional Competence (TPC), of the Nigerian Institute of Quantity Surveyors (NIQS) and admitted as a member of NIQS (MNIQS) may be admitted into 400 level provided such Candidate fulfill the UME requirements.
