Introduction

Sociology is a Social Science discipline that provides the needed panacea to the myriads of social problems and contending issues in the society. It is so encyclopedic in approach that being sociological is tantamount to discussing a phenomenon in it is inter-connectedness or inter-relatedness. This is what makes it very exciting and important that everybody should get involved; though not all will be privileged.

It is therefore my pleasure, on behalf of the entire staff and students of this great department, to welcome you to the department of Sociology, in Imo State University, Owerri.

Philosophy

The philosophy underlying the Discipline of Sociology, Imo State University Owerri is to prepare students to be able to apply the knowledge acquired to solve personal and societal practical problems; and to produce graduates who are imbued with the ability to understand, critically analyze and positively contribute to the ever-changing social world around them. In addition, the Department is pre-occupied with research, community services, high-level manpower development which would invariably benefit the globalized social market.

Our Mission

Our mission is to engage in high-level manpower development, research and community services that would lead to the production of high quality graduates for the globalized market as well as the extension of the frontiers of knowledge based on discipline, integrity and social responsibility.

Objectives

The main objectives of the discipline are:
i. to equip students with the knowledge of the concepts, theories and methods of the discipline of Sociology for a better appreciation of the social world.
ii. to inculcate in the students the spirit of scientific inquiry and objectivity.
iii. to prepare the students for the enhancement of national unity, national self-sufficiency, autonomy, and for promotion of a free egalitarian and democratic society.
iv to train manpower for the social and economic development of Nigeria and for positions of responsibility in the community.
v. to inculcate in the students the spirit of dedication to the services of our society in particular and humanity in general.
vi. to impart sufficient general knowledge designed to imbue in students a more rational and wider perspective and orientation towards co- operative endeavours and for a better appreciation of the Nigerian society, past and present.

These goals are pursued through relevant courses that are designed for thorough teaching, seminars, symposia, essay writing and research.

Admission Requirements

UTME:

Five credits including English Language and one of the social sciences including Mathematics.

Direct Entry:

Pass at least two social Science subjects at A’Level and at least “P” in O’Level Mathematics.
