Philosophy

The Department of Theatre Arts of the faculty of Humanities at the Imo State University, Owerri offers a Bachelors of Arts Degree in Theatre Arts. The theatre Arts Programme is designed for undergraduate and graduate students wishing for a wide variety of training and experience in preparation for the stiff competition in the world of work.

The programme is committed to being activity involved in artistic programmes of the highest quality while offering students the opportunity and means for training in the ability to perceive, create, appreciate, and associate and above all to practice the multi arts and crafts of the theatre. The basic thrust of the programme is professional expertise in production, performance and community service. While scholastic achievement in theory is considered essential to the educated theatre practitioner, equal emphasis is placed upon the development of the students as a self reliant individual and as a professional creative artist. As a member of the Faculty of Humanities, the Theatre Arts Programme is geared towards contributing to the development of the ebullient culture of the people and the promotion of the human artistic excellence.

Objectives

In recognition of the Philosophical statement above, the programme has the following objectives:
a. To provide for the student a liberal and professional education with the arts of the theatre at the core.
b. To enable students appreciate the fact that theatre is a group and collaborative arts, and as such, training acquired in the course will help foster the spirit of cooperation and tolerance in the individual artist.
c. To promote artistic activism through a vigorous and challenging production oriented experience.
d. To nurture the creative abilities of the students into packaging a finished product for the competitive market.

Admission Requirements

UTME:

The following are the minimum methods of admission into the B.A degree programme in Theatre Arts:-
a. The possession of WASC/SSCE or GCE ‘O’ Level Certificate with at least 5 credits passes including English Language, Mathematics and Literature in English at not more than 2 sittings.
b. A pass at the University Matriculation Examination (UTME) at the appropriate cut-off point as established by the Department for the particular year.
c. A transfer from other recognized institutions, provided that the candidate has applied for admission through JAMB and has obtained necessary university transfer forms.
